Winemaking can be one of the more satisfying and unique hobbies. While other guests bring commercial wines and fruitcake, someone who brings their own homemade wine will be the talk of the party.
Homemade wine is different from store-bought wine because it has a flavorful, distinct taste. Commercial wines usually are classified in one of three categories; white, red or port. Homemade wine may be similar to commercial wines in some ways but because of the way they are made, they don’t always fall into a particular category. Homemade wine is also usually made from fruit juice, either concentrates or fresh, crushed fruit. Sugar and yeast is added. Many people like the idea of brewing their own drink, some like the scientific process and some like to know they have an organic, toxin free wine. It is often shared with friends and family and goes well with a meal, dessert or cheese.
Wine barrels begin as oak trees. While redwood was used for a time, barrels are traditionally constructed of oak. Many consider French oak to be superior to all others, but American oak is becoming more popular. When American oak was first used, the barrels were poorly cut, aged, and constructed, and colored the flavor of the wine too much. Better construction and aging techniques have proven that American oak has no more impact on the wine than their French cousins. Since American oak does not yet have a long history, it is still a good bit cheaper than French oak.
When you think of fruit wine, you normally think of grapes. But virtually any fruit can be used to make wine. For example, China has produced plum wine for centuries. You can use peaches, pears, raspberries or even watermelon. You’d be surprised at how delicious their wine can be. When you decide to start making your own, choose a fruit that is readily available to you. If you have cherry bushes or apple trees in your yard, you could use them as a source for your wine. The process is actually quite fun!
