I am in the same boat as you. I haven't brewed yet with my own equipment either. What I did, and I recommend anyone new to the game, is to go to a friends house that does brew beer, and brew a batch with them. I went in halvsies with a friend, and we brewed a nice porter. By paying for a little more than half (he let me into his home, taught me the basics, etc.) he was more than happy to split the batch. If you don't have any friends that brew, maybe one of the guys or gals in the local club will let you tag along.

BTW--I just opened the first bottle...as Harry Carey would say, "Holy COW!"
