You might want to consider a dark crystal malt. I use a lot of
chocolate malt for Porter. It imparts a black coloring (slightly
smoky flavor) to the wort not brown. (or the stuff I'm getting does)
I put molasses in my porter for flavor. I had some "extra light" DME
sitting around with no particular recipe in mind and put an 8 ounce
bottle of molasses in it for color and flavor, it resulted in an amber
hue.
