| | | | Busted the hydometer Started a batch of Cooper's Nut Brown Ale yesterday. During the sanitizing I
broke my only hydrometer and was unable to measure OG.
I used 2lb of Muntons spraymalt extract. The total volume was 5 gallons
(US.)
What would be a good guestimate of the OG? I will be buying two replacement
hydrometers (1 spare) to measure the FG.

As Denny noted, I hope you had some other sugars in your brew, or it'll be
mighty thin!
If this happens again, simply take your sample, place it in a jar, cover it
with plastic wrap, place it in the fridge, then take your reading after you
get your new hydometer. Be sure it comes back up to 60F before you take the
reading, or it will be off.
Beer here,
Mike

this batch.
In my 1st batch of Cooper's Real ale I used 1 lb. The "kit" of ingredients
put together by my local store consisted of the can of concentrate, 1 lb of
the Muntons spraymalt extract and about 5oz of priming sugar.

Ah, a can of concentrate. Did I miss that in your other post? How much
did the can weigh? LIquid extract is around 36 ppg, so knowing the
weight we can get a handle on your OG.

The concentrate can weighs 1.7kg (3.75 lbs)
Mike,
Good suggestion, wish I had thought about it at the time.
I had a house full of people, 2 TVs going with different channels, cooking
hamburgers midpoint through the brewing process, then I busted the
hydrometer, altogether not conducive to rational thought!

Ah, better! That would give you an OG of 1.045.

Denny, what is the source of your calculation. I hate to be bumbling in the
dark in these matters.
Info greatly appreciated,

It's based on the theory of points/pound/gallon. That is, so many
gravity points from each lb. of fermentables per gallon of wort. DME has
45 points/pound/gallon and LME has 36. So to make 5 gal. of a 1.045
beer, you'd use 5 lbs. of DME. One lb. of DME in one gal. of water
yields an OG of 1.045, that is.

So DME = Dried Malt Extract
LME = xx Malt Extract (concentrate)?

I'm not Denny, but LME = Liquid Malt Extract. DME, as you might expect, gives
you more sugar per pound cuz all its water is removed. | | Thread Tools | | | | Display Modes | Linear Mode |
