brewing lagers

I have an old fridge in my basement by my bar, I can get the tempture up
to38 degrees. is this ok to ferment in or should I buy a refrigerator
thermostat control. to hook up to it

38 degrees is way too cold for primary fermentation. Your yeast won't do
anything but hibernate. You would want to check the yeast you are using,
but primary temps would want to be in the 50s. The 30s temperature range is
ideal for extended lagering, but you need to make sure fermentation is
complete before going that low.

You would need to get an external thermostat that turn the unit off at the
set range. Most online homebrew supply shops will have them.
