You get Prickly Brewer don't you?

My guess is that you need to water them more. Like 1 gal / plant / day
depending on your location and altitude.

Shade isn't the issue but moisture is. My first year and I have 5 plants at
about 20' each now. Only Chinook producing flowers, but it's only year 1.
I water every 3 days unless it rains, and in Memphis the past 2 summers rain
is easy. I hit with fertilizer every other week.
