Actually, there are a lot of ways to accomplish more body and head
retention beside maltodextrine. Anything that increases the protein
content of the beer will do it...rye, wheat, flaked barley for example.
However, all of those need to be mashed with diastatic malt.

And sugar works just as well as dextrose.
