distillation laws in california

I'm thinking about getting into distillery, but I don't know much about the
laws, especially in CA. I know that brewing beer and wine for personal
consumption is legal with quantity limits. What about distilling liquors?

It's illegal. See here for more information:

Also, you might want to look at the newsgroup rec.crafts.distilling for
a second opinion, as well as these websites:

I don't know about CA laws, but I've been told home distilation is
illegal. If you form a company and went professionally into it, you
can become licensed, but there are many legal issues with taxes and
quality control. Quality control since distilling at the wrong temp
can blind or even kill.

Might want to just stick with the beer and wine home operation.

later,

tom

I understand that the 'revinooers' will be after you if you start
distilling your own hooch.

How can distilling at the wrong temperature blind or kill? It sounds
like you are talking about methanol, but distilling regular sour mash or
whatever at the wrong temperature isn't going to cause methanol to form.
