Robin,
Here's some tips for getting the most out of on-line communities.
Don't leap in and ask a question immediately. "Lurk" for a while, reading
posts. Most of what you want to know has already been posted, often
recently.
Asking a specific question will be of a lot more value than just "How do I
brew?"
You will learn that every newsgroup of any worth has a resident guru or two,
plus lots of other nice people who like to help out - that's why they are
here. Treat these people with respect.
Get used to replies along the lines of "Google is your friend." It is
another way of asking you to be more specific. Also, Google IS a great tool,
used by all of us.
Chortling about "kill-filing" people is just plain annoying. If you must do
it, just do it. There is little value though, as you will still see the
replies quoted in other messages.
For your project, be aware that people don't like to be studied. (Watch the
cult movie Stone.) It assumes a level of superiority on your part, whether
you meant it or not. There's also the Heisenberg uncertainty principle - the
closer you study something, the less it is like it was originally.
Anyway,

That should get you started.
Cheers,
