Other than Sam Adams and Guinness, what commercial bottles are
suitable for homebrewing (non-twist-offs)?

course. Many "import" bottles have a smaller ridge which make it a
little harder to get a two handle style capper to work.

I thought twist-offs were a no-no . . . . . ?

Well... if you have a bench style capper, you can cap them with
some success. I did seem to always have some flat ones, however,
so I quit trying to use them.
My wing capper always capped the standard bottles with the bigger
lower lip best. The bottles with the smaller lower lip I always
felt like they weren't so tight, but they never leaked. |

Bass and Harp bottles work well with a bench capper (although a wing
capper can cap them as well). |

| | | | Re: which bottles are suitable? I would suggest against using Guinness bottles (type with rocket
widget). Although getting the widget out of the bottle is not too
difficult, the bottles don't seal well with wing-style cappers. I
used ~52 on my last batch, and ended up w/out carbonation in most of
them. They don't leak beer, but the gas seems to escape.

Any bottle that works with your capper. I use Corona bottles. They
work well with my lever capper, are long neck, and clear so I can see
how the beer looks (store away from sunlight or fluorescent lighting).
Corona is my bottle of choice, and I made lots of divided wood cases
to hold them. Their labels are painted on and not easy to remove -
I have a bench capper also. It is more of a pain to setup and use,
but it will cap damn near anything that will take a cap. Heinekin,
Foster, IBC Root Beer, etc. bottles . . . which the lever capper
won't do.
With a bench capper you can use champagne bottles (all my bottles
work, but there may be some that won't)
Sparkling Welch Grape juice bottles with screw off caps can be reused,
ditto plastic soda bottles.
Grolch and Fisher bottles, work well, have a captive spring loaded cap
and are a breeze to use. The rubber gaskets are replaceable and have
a life of ~5 years or five+ batches.
Except for the rarity (and the fact that I don't like Grolch) that
bottle would be my first choice. |

Well, I think in my next batch I'll mix a couple twist-offs in and see
how they do . . . . .
