| | | | Adding more hops I am trying a new recipe that requires I add extra hops after fermentation.
I was thinking that I should rack the beer into a secondary fermenter and
add the extra hops at the same time.
Does that sound right?
Also how much longer after adding the hops should I let the beer sit before
bottling. Finally, should I filter out all the hops and yeast sediment
before bottling?
Thanks in advance. |

It doesn't really sound right to me.. but maybe it is. I was at the
American Beer Fest in Boston over the summer and one vendor had a device
that forced the beer thru the hops when serving.
But it is my understanding that the hop oils do not come out unless heated.

Yes, it's called "dry hopping". Your procedure sounds fine.

A week or two would be fine.

You don't need to actually filter it, but when you rack to your bottling
bucket you should be careful to leave as much of the sediment and hops
behind as you can.

That's true for bittering, but dry hopping as the poster above describes is
for mostly aroma and some flavour. You don't need heat for those.

| | | | Re: Adding more hops Well it is a typical recipe from brewers' best, however I am just trying to
add extra hop/bitter flavor. The owner of the brewing supply store told me
to get two extra packs of hops, add one-pack 15 minutes before brewing ends
and the other after the initial fermentation. I really am just trying to
figure exactly how to do this. Thanks for your advice.

Yes

Dont filter it you will remove the yeast. just rack it to a bottling
bucket to remove the sediment then bottle.

This will give you extra hop flavour (not the same thing as bitterness).
[color=blue]

This will give you extra aroma.

It sounds like your procedure for adding the hops is correct, but neither one
will give you much bitterness, if any. In order to add extra bitterness you
would have to boil more hops for the entire duration of the boil (60 minutes?)
It all depends on what you want to add.

Thanks for the explanation. Makes sense now that I understand what the OP
was looking to do.

will rack it today. Thanks again.

| | | | Re: Adding more hops Thanks for the information. If I wanted to make an ESB, could I just take a
typical IPA recipe and add extra hops for the duration of the boil, and add
them after the initial fermentation?
Thanks
