The more experienced brewers at the supply stores advice against this. Does
anyone else use these same techniques? |

think a t-shirt is a practical filter or a good use of cotton. Maybe
you should try some high thread count linen.

There's nothing wrong with cleaning with bleach as long as you rinse well.
I'm sure many brewers use it.
I don't know why you filter through a T-shirt though, personally I would
skip that.

I used bleach for almost a decade without any problems. It's both a cleaner
and a sanitizer, is really cheap, and is available everywhere. The only
down side is you need to use a lot of water to rinse it, take greater care
to rinse very well, and be damn sure you don't do your cleaning wearing
clothes you care about. :)
As for the shirt as a filter, I don't understand the point. I'd also be
concerned about anything *not* rinsed out the last time it was washed.

| | | | Re: techniques? The reason I use the shirt is to improve the clarity. I first got the idea
when a friend and I were making wine. The fermenter we used did not stay in
one place and the pulp from all the fruits did not settle to the bottom. We
ran the wine through a t-shirt and the clarity greatly improved. Ever since
then I have done the same to wort.

| | | | Re: techniques? Beer and wine are quite different. Beer can pick up a infection very
easily, moreso that wine. I would as most of the others have suggested
, skip the t shirt thing. In my opinion your just begging for an
infected batch.

A fine beer can be judged by one sip , but it's better to be sure

Cleopatra's boyfriends technique , only he used an Afgans loin cloth , he
would have been using crude malt so I guess the added flavouring from the
loin cloth gave his beer a bit more body and of course the yeast from the
loincloth would possibly have helped , if you might recall the south
american indians introduced faecies from new babies (National Geographic
some while back) which turned out to be close to Carlsbergenis .......so to
get the goodies you will need to fold the Tee shirt bottom end into the
centre where your filtering your wort ......very interesting ....wish you
wern't so far away ......I'd love to sample your efforts .......Cheers Ian

If I did, a clean freshly laundered T shirt would be worth a try.
Bleach is an excellent sanitiser, just be aware of the strength you use, be
careful about spilling on your clothes (I strip to my undies whilst
sanitising with bleach) & be sure to rinse off with filtered water.
I use bleach (diluted swimming pool "liquid chlorine") & will continue to do
so.
Like you I am always being advised at the brew shop to use something else
but they are there to sell stuff ..... right.

Try Milton tablets, if they ok to steralize gear for the baby, they are ok
for home brew gear. |

against this practice other than to make a sale. Not everyone in
business is soley motivated by profit.
