| keg as primary fermenter? hi. i just bought a few more 50L kegs (13 gal-ish) from a local
brewery that was part of their "to be scrapped" shipment. took me a
long time to find em and I'm " dayum happy!"
one is my new mash tun - the neck is dented and bent, so the top is
coming off, no matter what. I'll see if i can use it as a lid
somewhere else.
however, one is in *great shape*, and I'd like to drill one hole for a
ball-valve (SS), and use it as a primary. This would be instead of
using *all* my carboys to hold a full batch (10-12gals in the new brew
system).
I have the ball valve (1/2"), and SS nipple and locknut. All I have to
do is fit a bung in the kegneck for an airlock, and brew. I'm
confident that I can rig a system for getting the nipple, locknut,
washer, and gasket through the kegneck and into the hole I drill for
it. (more than likely it'll be a crescent wrench with an extension
handle made from a pipe.and some tape...)
Carboys'l be for secondary (unless I keg straight to cornies).
Anyone ever try this? Anyone ever try inverting the keg, and getting a
bulkhead to seal in the keg neck (somewhat like a conical, but not a
purpose-built.)
i'm not worried about yeast harvesting, or trub clearing. I'd just
LOVE to have a 13 gallon fermenter that cost me a buck a gallon, and
is JUST a little smaller than my boiler (trub loss, grain absorption,
etc)
happy octoberfest.
