Grain Steep..

OK relative newbe.. five whole batches under my belt 5gal ones.. Been using
BrewersBest kits, nice clean easy.
Have been reading as much as I can on brewing, books internet, etc.

Question I have is on the 'special' grains that are in kits. The
instructions say to steep for 20min. at 160-170. This seems from what I have
read to be the last step in brewing a whole grain wort been.
Would it have any advantages to go the whole mashing route with these
grains? Just what do the extra grains add to an extract kit?
Color? Flavor? extra sugar?

Yes, yes, and yes. Just very little sugar and no enzyme production. The main purpose is to extract the color and some flavor that is not present in the extract. Full mashing of the specialty grains is pointless. Once you more comfortable in the process, maybe partial mashing will be you next step?

Good luck,
Wild
