How to Avoid Homemade Wine Fiascos

Some people may believe that homemade wine isn’t worth the trouble to make it. However, if you follow the steps to making homemade wine carefully, it is well worth the effort. If you are going to make the effort to create your own special brand of tastefully delicious wine, then take the time to avoid a few minor disasters with the following tips for success.

· Check the temperature in the room before you begin. It should be somewhere between 65 and 75 degrees Fahrenheit in order for the yeast to work properly.
· Use tap water if yours is drinkable. If it isn’t drinkable, then purchase distilled water to use for your winemaking adventure. Avoid softened water since this type of water typically has added salt that will do more harm than good to your wine.
· Sanitize your equipment before you begin. If you have purchased a kit, then most likely, you have the sulfites you need along with instructions. Don’t skip this step simply because the equipment looks clean. It is essential to sanitize every single tiny nook and cranny that will be used for the wine in order to avoid contaminates like mold and bacteria.
· Use the right equipment. Don’t substitute ordinary plastic containers just because you can. The equipment that you use to make your wine needs to be food grade equipment. Wine making kits provide this type of equipment. If you don’t have any, get some pronto.
· Avoid plastic and wooden spoons since they degrade over time.
· Be patient when making wine. Remember the old adage, “a watched pot never boils any faster,” and take the full allotment of time to make the wine. Wine making may take several weeks or months even. Never complete a step in the project ahead of time. It is better to be a bit late rather than a bit early.
· Take the time to release the carbon dioxide properly from your batch. Stir vigorously and sufficiently to avoid allowing the carbon dioxide to remain.
· Keep records of your wine making endeavors. Don’t rely on memory. If you write it down, then you can refer back to your success stories and replicate them, while avoiding the disasters.
