Cider/Mead

Anyone here do any Cider / Mead?

I've been trying to get some fresh apple juice for cider, but haven't found any.

I also have about 10 gallons of mead that have been aging for almost a year now. I'm thinking of doing some with blueberries, and some with strawberries. Not sure what else.

I'm wanting to get into doing mead; my experiences with beer have been excellent! Do you have any recommendations/links for a first time mead-maker?

I've had a go with cider once as an experiment when we had a glut of apples from out two trees. It went furry on top though and the wife made me chuck it out.

Living in the heart of Somerset cider country, all the local farms do it.

The problem is extracting enough liquid from the apples without a proper press. What they do is pulp up the apples and wrap them in muslin cloth before putting them under the press. then they pretty much just leave it to get on with fermenting.

some of it knocks your head off mind!

One way of getting all the juice out of an apple without the use of the press, is to freeze them first, than thaw them out. Than wrap them in a muslin or cheese cloth. Of course youll need to still press them with something, but the freezing than thawing makes them very mushy and easy to squeeze by hand.
