Question Newbie Needing some questions answered

Okay first off i want to say that the art of beer making looks very appealing. I'm a poor college student that loves to drink budweiser. It being the holidays and my birthday (22) i wanted to get something i could use. What really turned me on is the price of making your own brew. I heard about 5 gals for 6-7 dollars (more or less) Now my question is what kind of kit should i buy that would be idiot proof and yet still provide the potental to be a masters brews kit (more advanced if such a thing) I am semi poor i'd like to get something that will come with the ingredients needed for under 70bucks if possible. The beer i like the best is budweiser being an amertur drinker myself i wouldn't know what type of beer would most resemble that. And how simple are the instructions. Could i do this as perhaps a hobbie and still yield enough beer to make it worth the money. I mean beer is going to be had one way or another so i'm guessing i'm looking at spending about 30 bucks a month need be on the upkeep and ingredients to always have a batch. Thanks for your help and i look forward to being part of your community. Thanks again

First of all I don't think it's even possible to make a 5 gal batch for 6-7
dollars, unless you grow your own grain and hops. But let's put that aside
and focus on other things.

For a complete newbie the surest way to make a drinkable beer is to go for
no-boil malt extract beer kits. These also require the smallest amount of
equipment. Making beer from grain is cheaper, but it does require much more
equipment, some experience and a lot more time.

If you have a local home brew shop you should pay them a visit and see
what they have available. There are a lot of extract kits available, some
better and some worse. Just keep in mind that if the instructions call for
sugar, you should use malt extract instead (liquid or dried). Although in your
case if you want something that resembles Budweiser, you might as well use
sugar... Because if you make a beer with sugar there's not going to be much
taste or flavor, but Bud hasn't got either.

Also check out another thread at

where I wrote a little bit more about this same subject. There's also a couple
useful links.
