What home brewing kit to buy? Help!

Hi everyone,

My boyfriend is interested in learning how to brew beer. I thought I would get him a kit for Christmas. Does anyone have any recommendations as to which kit to buy? Or, should I buy things individually? I have no idea what I need at all, I just thought this would be a nice gift for him. Any help would be so much appreciated. Please help! Thank you.

If he has never brewed beer in the past you will need to get a kit that has everything, and I do mean EVERYTHING. He will need the fermenter, a ferment lock, some bottles to put it in when completed, a capper, and of course the ingredients. Not to say this can not be purchased but since I am writing this post on Christmas eve night I would say it may be a bit late now to get him a kit.

SO... For future note or maybe a late present, check out a local store that sells brewing equipment or check out some web sites. My favorite is Williams Brewing because they have beginner kits with everything he could need to get into the hobby and they also are known to go with better quality stuff. Not to say other sites don't have quality stuff but Williams goes out of the way to only sell the best.

On a cash flow note, be prepared to spend on the very lowest side $50 all the way up to a little over $100 for better quality (not including bottles). There are ways to do it cheaper but for a person not involved with the hobby buying for a person just getting started, go with a good kit that has all the neccesary equipment and enough ingrediants to get that first batch going.

For bottles you can buy empty ones made just for home brewing or you can get him a second gift of beer that comes in a poptop bottle that can be cleaned and reused. About 2 cases of 12 oz brews should do for a standard 5 gallon batch.

i was really scared about the price when you said this, but then you go on to say its easily doable with $100.

So I will be looking out for Williams.

re: home brewing kit

Thank you! He was gone for the holidays anyway, so I was planning on it being a late gift. Yes, I definitely want to buy quality. He's never done it before and I looked online and found numerous kits but I don't want to waste my money on junk. There is a local brewing store, maybe I should head there and buy everything individually? They could at least point me in the right direction I'm sure. Thanks, I will most likely write again!
