hello from Sacramento!

Hello everybody!
I'm new to the forum and to homebrewing. In fact, I'm new enough to homebrewing that I still haven't bought any equipment or started my first batch. I'm still kind of researching everything, trying to figure out everything I will need to actually start that first batch, and how to actually go about brewing my own beer. Any tips for a soppin'-wet-behind-the-ears beginner?

The best beginner book to read is How To Brew by John Palmer. Its online and free to read.
I don't know if the Original Home Brew Outlet is still around there in Sacramento but if they are, that would be a great place to start with getting equipment.
There is also a Homebrewing club in Sacrament called the Gold Country Brewers. I found a great deal of info in our local club.

Welcome to the forum.

Re: hello from Sacramento!

not yet, I'm still doing my research, and slowly but surely (at least I hope) talking my wonderful wife into "allowing" me to buy the equipment... I think maybe in a couple weeks I'm going to get an intro kit for extract brewing from my local homebrewing shop. I'm REALLY looking forward to starting.

Re: hello from Sacramento!

In no time you'll find this hobby becoming more than that. Getting SWMBO on board early will help in retrieving more funds for new equipment.

Good luck,
Wild

Re: hello from Sacramento!

I am in the same boat as you. I haven't brewed yet with my own equipment either. What I did, and I recommend anyone new to the game, is to go to a friends house that does brew beer, and brew a batch with them. I went in halvsies with a friend, and we brewed a nice porter. By paying for a little more than half (he let me into his home, taught me the basics, etc.) he was more than happy to split the batch. If you don't have any friends that brew, maybe one of the guys or gals in the local club will let you tag along.

BTW--I just opened the first bottle...as Harry Carey would say, "Holy COW!"
nice and smooth......gotta go, I hear a good afternoon in Wyoming calling my name...

Re: hello from Sacramento!

I used to live out in Sacramento. There is a brewery out there in Downtown called "Brew it Up" I'm sure you have heard of it. If not, this is a place you can go to brew beer. They have all the ingredients, equipment, and know how to get the process done. My first brew was brewed there. I would suggest going there to brew few times. It really gives you good knowledge about how the brewing process works. The Brew masters are always standing on hand for any questions. My Brother-in-Law goes there many times a year to brew. At an average of $150 for a 12 gal pot. Not too shaby for not buying any equipment. So if your wife has a hard time dealing with al the brewing equipment, this could be your outlet. Plus, they clean and sanitize everything for you!! Definatly worth the extra coin if you ask me...
