Aging Mead

How long on average do you age your mead?

Re: Aging Mead

Til it gets drank
If I had the facility, I'd age it as long as possible. I've heard some meads won't hit their flavor peak for 99 years. I just don't have that kind of patience.

Re: Aging Mead

Hehe, till it gets drunk. I like that... so where does one go to find themselves a 99 year old bottle of mead to test that theory.

Re: Aging Mead

Europe. I believe Poland is the best place to start but bring your pocket book.

Re: Aging Mead

By bring your pocket book I am guessing it would cost quite a bit. Have any idea what mead costs in Poland? If I ever pass through there I'd have to plan ahead. Hehe.

Re: Aging Mead

I haven't the foggiest these days. You might be able to download a price sheet or two by Googling Polish Meads. This may also help:
Poltorak (“oneandahalfer”) – 1 part of mead is diluted with a half part of water. These meads are the strongest and are matured for the longest time.
Dwojniak (“double”) – 1 part of mead and 1 part of water. Poltoraks and Dwojniaks are often referred to as “royal meads” because of their superior quality.
Trojniak (“triple”) – 1 part mead and two parts of water. Perhaps the most popular mead. Less expensive than the “royal” ones and still quite good.
Czworniak (“quadruple”) – yes, you’ve guessed it – 1 part of mead and three parts of water. Somewhat less good than “Czworniak”.
And finally – Piatak (“quintuple”) – 1 part of mead and four parts of water of course – this kind is rarely seen in stores.
