using the airlock

Hi all Sorry for the newbie question but using the airlock. I have read a couple of different ways in using the airlock. i have read that you should fill half way with water and i have read no water.. What is the correct way and if i missed anything let me know

I usually put about 1/3 full if it's the one piece design. The three piece I don't use cause it can suck the water back in when the temperature goes down a few degrees.

I use both and as long as you use sanitized water, there won't be any problem.

Especially for the primary. You can just cover it with aluminum foil and it'll be fine if you want...but at least add water to the "water lock".
