Mimicking your favorite beers

I know a lot of home brewers do it because they want to experiment with flavors themselves. Do you ever try to get brews that are close to your favorite commercial beers, though? Or maybe an international brew you've had elsewhere but can't get locally?

That was one of the reasons I began brewing. Only so many beers were available to me but the recipes for beers that were out of my reach were available.

Which beers did you start out with? I was thinking of doing the same thing, but I feel there's no way I can get it close to the way they actually brew theres. I can never find Hopping Frog's Double Aged Imperial Stout. I've thought about trying to brew it, but I feel like it's to complicated of a beer for me to begin with.

When I do start brewing, I will end up getting to mimic my favorites. I know I will have difficulty in mimic my favorites because they are from microbreweries already.

The first two clones I tried were Chimay's Grand Reserve (Strong Dark Belgian) and Brooklyn's Black Chocolate Stout (Imperial). Both lasted four years before they were completely drank.
