Finding Home Brewing Labels

When you have are brewing your own alcohol, whether you want to produce a fine, dark beer or a delicate, dry wine, chances are good that you want to show it off. While you could of course just present your alcohol in a plain bottle, think about how much fun it would be to hand over bottles that have personalized labels! Some people simply use mailing labels and write the names, the date, and the type of alcohol on the bottle, but if you want something that is a little more fancy, there are several options open to you.

In the first place, you can always have your labels printed by a professional company. This is something that many people do, but you also need to make sure that you have enough bottles to make it worth your while. Most companies will print you labels, but the cost for even a few labels can be quite high. This is ideal if you want to go into business with your home brewing, but it is not necessarily a good prospect if you only want to do a limited amount of brewing.

When you want labels for your bottles, you will find that as long as you have a laser printer and an image creation program on your computer, you will be able to make your own. This requires a small amount of proficiency with image editing software, but it is fairly straightforward. Start by picking up blank labels from your local office supply store. There are labels that are specifically meant to be sent through a printer and this is something that can make a huge difference to the quality of your label.

Then open up your image editing program and start to create a label. There will be ready-to-use clip art images that you can add to your label, as well as ways to create text on your label. Depending on the program that you choose, you may even have label making templates, where you simply need to fill in the blanks that are left for the words before you simply hit print.

There are also some sites online that are specifically made for home brewers and the labels that they need. These sites tend to offer a limited number of templates that you can simply adjust as you need to for your own purposes. They are ideal when you only want something serviceable, rather than something very flashy. The pleasant thing about sites like these is that they are free, and you can easily use them as long as you have a printer and some blank labels.

When you are thinking about putting a label on your home brews, you’ll find that it is important to think about design. When you are going to all the trouble of creating your own labels, you know that you want it to be something that reflects you. Start by doing a bit of research. Take a look at other labels, both professional and those from amateur brewers. What do they look like, and how can you make sure that yours has a similar aesthetic? Take note of things like the shape of the label, the colors used and the fonts that people find. While you of course want yours to be unique, you’ll find that there are certain key design points that will help you stay on target.

Think about the shape that you want from your label, and consider whether there are any aspects that you want to emphasize. For example, if honey was a prime ingredient in your brewing process, consider throwing a bee onto the label. If you are proud of the state where you come from, throw your state’s silhouette onto the label.

There are many ways to get the right labels for your beer, so start looking now! It can take weeks to get your beer to where you want it to be, so spend some time thinking about how you are going to be packaging your goods!
