Canning Tips

I am a little confused about the canning process. I'm worried that I won't do it right and will have rotten jam or string beans because I'm not doing it right. What type of jars do you use? And do you have any advice about making sure it's sealed right?
When I first started canning, someone recommended a "Ball Blue Book." I don't know if you can still get them but it has step by step directions on how to can almost everything. If you can't find one, I'll bet your grandmother has one.
