Planting Companions That Actually Work

This summer I tried my hand at massive companion planting, and I have to say that I'm not too impressed. Corn and Sunflowers do not grow well together, and my peppers didn't do too well growing near the tomatoes. Has anyone had any successes with companion planting that they are willing to share?

I have not tried companion planting myself, but I hear that basil and tomatoes grow well together. Perhaps you can try that instead of peppers.
Believe it or not, I did that too. I think that was one of the only successful combinations from last year that I can vouch for this year too.
