Rehydrate or Skip?

Do you rehydrate your dry yeast before proofing it or do you skip directly to the proofing? I read that it's better to rehydrate but I'm not sure why since proofing would rehydrate it anyway.

For those that I know who use dry yeast and do not make starters, just sprinkle one or two packets onto their wort without hydrating.

I figured most people probably didn't bother rehydrating. I'm surprised they don't proof the yeast, though; I've had bad yeast more than once and I'd rather know before I try adding to the wort.

I have, luckily, never encountered bad yeast so I do just sprinkle it. I think you should be safe enough as long as it's not out of date.
