Wine and cheese pairings

Is there a certain wine that is supposed to go with each type of cheese or should I just serve both red and whites and let people choose? I'd like for them to get the benefits of whichever would bring out the best flavors of the cheeses. It's all so complicated.

Last summer, I had some friends over to swim in the pool and have cocktails. She drank chardonnay and I had no idea which cheese went best. I looked up a chart on the internet and have used it ever since. We had a nice time and I learned to like chardonnay.

I like Chardonnay. It's a nice, mild white that should pair with a lot of things without overpowering. I was wondering which types of cheese do you think can stand up to the more full bodied reds. Perhaps I should go look for that chart. :D Thanks.
